Guide to Morocco’s Best Beaches Near Marrakech – 2024

I totally get why, if you’re about to visit Marrakech, you immediately want to find the beaches in Marrakech.  I’m a beach person myself so whenever I can include some clear water and beautiful beaches in my vacation itinerary, I’m all about it!

The city of Marrakech is inland. Therefore, it isn’t directly adjacent to any beaches. However, the region of Marrakech-Safi extends to the Atlantic Ocean and includes within it some amazing beaches.  It will be a bit of a journey to get there from Marrakech (the city), but well worth it.

However, if you want the water relaxation options without the journey part, Marrakech has several pool clubs that might satisfy all of your needs (except, maybe, the golden sand).

Let’s talk about it!

About the Marrakech-Safi Region

If you’ve made it to the page, then I probably don’t have to tell you how incredible Marrakech is. There’s so much to do there! (You can check out my article here for a perfect 2-day itinerary to explore Marrakech)!

It’s a city full of vibrant, interesting markets, delicious authentic foods, and more history and culture that you can ever digest in just one trip. With its bustling medina, colorful souks, and lively squares, Marrakech is a must-visit spot for anyone eager to dive deep into Moroccan culture.

Can you tell I love Marrakech and all it has to offer??  Every time I visit the city, I find something new.  It’s truly one of the best places to visit in Morocco, North Africa.

One thing I don’t love, however, is that there are no beaches in Marrakech (womp womp).

You can’t have it all, I guess. 🤷‍♀️

But that’s what you get when one of your favorite cities in the world is inland.

The Good News

The good news for beach lovers – however – is that Marrakech is located in the Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco. It’s one of the twelve administrative regions of the country. The region is a treasure trove of natural beauty – from the majestic Atlas Mountains to the tranquil shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

So there are definitely beach opportunities within reach when visiting the Marrakech-Safi region.

You’ll find beautiful coastal towns within the region where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the ocean breeze. Whether you’re a sun worshipper or a water sports enthusiast, the beaches of Marrakech-Safi offer a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Once you’ve gotten your fill of the historic medina and all that rich history, you can make your way to the Moroccan coast. There, you’ll enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and all the sun and surf you can handle.

Getting from Marrakech to the Beach

Most flexible – Driving

Renting a car and driving to the beach is a popular option for travelers who want flexibility and independence. From Marrakech, you can take the highway towards your chosen beach destination. For example, to reach Essaouira, you would take the N8 road westward. It’s essential to have a map or GPS navigation to guide you along the way.  A variation on driving yourself is taking a taxi, which is also an option.

Once you are out of the city, you shouldn’t have much problem with the drive itself. The roads are largely paved and you’ll mostly be driving through the desert.  However, I recommend that you be on the lookout for police checkpoints. Be prepared to be patient as the officials can be very thorough in their checks.

If you choose to take a taxi, I recommend bartering for the price of the trip. Standard pricing is around 700 dirhams (~$70 USD), though you may be able to get a cheaper price HERE

Most economical – Bus

Several bus companies operate routes between Marrakech and coastal towns like Essaouira, Safi, and Agadir. You can check schedules and purchase tickets at the bus stations in Marrakech. Two options are Supratours or CTM bus stations.

I don’t generally recommend using the bus to get to the beach from Marrakech unless cost is really a prohibitive factor, or unless you are only planning to make a one-way trip.

Though you’ll only pay around $12 for the trip, you’ll also be traveling for around 3 hours, and unable to control when and where you stop along the way.  That is a lot of your beach day spent in transit in a confined space with little control!

Pool Clubs/Beach Clubs in Marrakech

If you want the water sun relaxation and fun without the hours of travel to get to the beach, here are some local water attraction that may suit your needs:

beach club and pool club in marrakech

🏖 Snob Beach Club, Route de l’ourika, KM 10, Marrakesh 40000, Morocco

🏖 Famous Beach Club, Route de l’Ourika, Marrakesh 40000, Morocco

🏖 Beach Mama/Waky, Les Jardins de l’Atlas KM 13 route de l’ourika, Marrakesh, Morocco

I want to highlight here that if you want part of your experience to include meeting and engaging with Moroccan local, beach clubs likely won’t satisfy your needs. Locals don’t usually use the beach clubs – leaving them for use by tourists and expats.

Also, be sure to check the location shortly before attending because the clubs do sometimes temporarily close for updating.
