Fun Fact: Did you know this city, founded in 1682, boasts the firsts of many things in the US: the first library, medical school, hospital, zoo, the national capital, stock exchange, and business school?

Day 1 of your 2 Days in Philadelphia

Morning: Independence Hall – Liberty Bell – Elfreth’s Alley

Tour the Independence Hall

To kick off our 2 days in Philadelphia, let’s dive into the city’s rich history. Start with a visit to the iconic Independence Hall in the historic district.  Back in the day, this building served as the original White House, housing the three branches of the colonial government. Oh, and it’s also where the Declaration of Independence was signed. A pretty big deal in American history, if you ask me!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA at historic Independence Hall during autumn season.

Exploring Independence Hall requires a guided tour. But don’t worry, these are quick and painless, usually lasting less than 30 minutes. This makes it a perfect addition to your morning itinerary. Plus it allows you to squeeze in other exciting activities throughout the day.

Here’s the cherry on top: these tours are practically free! You’ll only need to pay a small $1 USD administrative fee. To ensure a smooth experience, I highly recommend booking your tour online the night before your visit. New tickets are released after 5 pm daily, and you can choose a time slot that fits your schedule.

If you’re feeling spontaneous, you can also try your luck at the Visitor Center across from Independence Hall. However, be prepared for potential ticket unavailability and security screenings.

Pro Tip: Independence Hall is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Arriving 30 minutes before your tour time is recommended to avoid any last-minute hiccups. The only exception to the need for pre-booking is during January and February (excluding holidays). That’s when tours are open to the public.

See the Liberty Bell

Fresh off your enlightening tour of Independence Hall, it’s time to continue your historical immersion. Visit the Liberty Bell, another must-see on your 2 days in Philadelphia itinerary.

This iconic symbol of American history has been a cornerstone of the national narrative since the country gained independence from the British in 1776.

2 days in Philadelphia -Liberty Bell

While its fame is often associated with the fight for independence, the Liberty Bell actually predates the Revolution in 1751. It was originally commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of William Penn’s

Charter of Privileges, Pennsylvania’s first constitution.

Interestingly, the bell wasn’t always known by its current name. Originally called the State House Bell, it received its iconic moniker in the 1830s during the fight against slavery, becoming a powerful symbol of equality throughout that pivotal period. The bell even embarked on a nationwide tour until 1915. That’s when it found its permanent home in the Liberty Bell Center, where it remains today.

Even in its stationary state, the Liberty Bell continues to resonate. As a symbol of hope and equality, it draws over 1 million visitors each year.

I loved seeing the Liberty Bell the first time I went – it really felt like I was experiencing history. What I didn’t love…the line. The lines tend to get a bit slower as the day progresses, so ideally you’ll start your Liberty Center experience before 11am.

Take a short walk to Elfreth’s Alley and Museum

Feeling the weight of history after your morning explorations of day 1 of your 2 days in Philadelphia? Time to lighten things up with a charming stroll through Elfreth’s Alley and Museum, located just a quick 5-minute drive from Independence Hall in the Old City neighborhood of Philly.

2 days in Philadelphia - Elfreth's Alley

This quaint alley isn’t your average city street. It’s actually one of the oldest residential streets in the entire country, dating back to the 18th century. Back then, Philadelphia was experiencing a boom, leading to overcrowding, especially near the bustling ports. Enterprising tradesmen, needing quicker access to the river, convinced landowners to create paths between their properties. One such path, named after blacksmith and land developer Jeremiah Elfreth, became known as Elfreth’s Alley.

What makes Elfreth’s Alley truly unique is that the houses lining it, all built between 1720 and 1836, are still inhabited! The only exceptions are houses #124 and #126, which serve as the Elfreth’s Alley Museum, open between April and November.

Afternoon: Reading Terminal Market – American Revolution Museum

Head to Reading Terminal Market

After your historical discoveries at Elfreth’s Alley, it’s time to tantalize your taste buds with a visit to the iconic Reading Terminal Market. Nestled beneath the majestic ruins of the Reading Railroad’s 1891 train station (a National Historic Landmark) in Center City, this vibrant marketplace is a true Philadelphian gem.

With over 70 vendors under one roof, Reading Terminal Market is a foodie paradise. You’ll get to savor everything from Philly cheesesteak, Greek souvlaki, and Thai curries to Mexican tacos and Indian samosas.

But Reading Terminal Market isn’t just about food. You’ll also find an eclectic mix of vendors selling homemade crafts, unique jewelry, and local souvenirs. So, while you’re waiting for your cheesesteak (a must-try, by the way!), browse the aisles and discover hidden treasures.

Open from 8 am to 6 pm daily (excluding some major holidays), with individual vendor hours varying slightly, Reading Terminal Market is definitely a must-visit on your 2 days in Philadelphia.

Museum of the American Revolution

Your 2 days in Philadelphia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution. Though it’s a newcomer, having opened its doors in 2017, its modern design seamlessly blends with the timeless story it tells.

Think of it as a time machine landing you right in the heart of the revolution. You’ll see real swords and uniforms, peek into personal diaries and letters, and even stand in George Washington’s actual war tent! There’s even a cool film that shows how Washington went from being a military leader to becoming the very first president of the United States.

2 days in Philadelphia - American Revolution Museum

But the museum isn’t just about looking at stuff. They’ve got life-size mannequins and interactive exhibits that make history feel real and exciting. Perfect for both curious grown-ups and history-loving adventurers (of all ages!).

Evening: Rittenhouse Square

Visit Rittenhouse Square

After a day packed with history and exploration, unwind and soak in the city vibes at Rittenhouse Square. This charming park, established in the 17th century, boasts the title of being the 4th oldest square in the entire nation. While it may not be as sprawling as Central Park, Rittenhouse Square packs a punch with its verdant beauty.

Spring in Rittenhouse square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The park is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a leisurely stroll, jog, or even a picnic under the sun. It occasionally hosts craft shows and free events, especially during the warmer months. Check their website before your visit to see if any fun activities coincide with your 2 days in Philadelphia adventure.

Dinner on Rittenhouse Square

Finish up your first day in Philadelphia at one of Rittenhouse Square’s iconic restaurants. Some of my personal favorites on the Square are:

Devon (for seafood – I love the lobster cobb salad)

Rouge (for American-French food – try the Rouge Burger (medium, no onions for me, please 😋))

Parc (for French food – my go-to is the escargot followed by the quiche with salad or the trout amandine.

Each of these restaurants have incredible food. But I also love that, weather permitting, you can sit outdoors at Rittenhouse Square on 18th Street and people-watch.

Day 2 of your 2 Days in Philadelphia

Morning: Love Park – Philly Museum of Art – Franklin Institute

Snag a photo op with the LOVE sign at Love Park

Start day 2 of your Philadelphia itinerary bright and early at LOVE Park.

2 days in Philadelphia - Love park
LOVE Park, in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Officially known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, this charming green space is most famous for its iconic LOVE sculpture. It’s become a symbol of the city and a must-see for any visitor.

But LOVE Park is more than just a photo op (although, let’s be honest, that Instagram-worthy moment is pretty special). It’s also a great place to start your second day in Philadelphia. Grab a coffee from the Starbucks cattycorner to LOVE park. Then take a little while to enjoy it while you soak up the vibes of Center City Philadelphia.

From where you are, you can see City Hall and the William Penn statue on top of it. While people-watching, you’ll get a good sense of the Philly vibe.

Explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art

After taking your iconic photos, you can take a leisurely 30-minute walk down Benjamin Franklin Parkway over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. (It’s also just a 5 minute drive.)

Along the way, you’ll notice the world flags from Love Park to the Art Museum.

Once at the museum, you’ll see the incredible and iconic ‘Rocky Steps’, otherwise known as the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps.

2 days in Philadelphia - Museum of Art

Yes, it’s the very museum featured in the Rocky movies, where Sylvester Stallone’s character famously trained by running up the grand staircase. (Insider tip: Before conquering the stairs yourself, don’t forget to snap a photo with the Rocky statue. It’s located to the right of the steps, at the base.)

Once you reach the summit, catch your breath. Then take in that epic city view, as you’re right at the doorstep of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This place is an absolute treasure trove of art, housing masterpieces by legends like Matisse, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Cézanne. The museum even houses entire structures from around the world, including a mind-blowing 14th-century Buddhist temple.

And get this: your general admission ticket also includes access to the Rodin Museum, which boasts a fantastic collection of sculptures by the famous Auguste Rodin, including “The Thinker.”

General admission is quite affordable ($25 for adults and children 18 and younger for free), but if you’re looking for a deal, head over on a Friday evening (5-8:45 PM) or the first Sunday of the month for their “pay-what-you-wish” admission. The museum is open from Thursday to Monday, so you have plenty of flexibility to fit this artistic adventure into your 2 days in Philadelphia itinerary.

Have fun at the Franklin Institute

The next stop on your 2 days in Philadelphia adventure is the legendary Franklin Institute! This place is a science playground for all ages, inspired by the mind of the one and only Benjamin Franklin (Philly’s favorite founding father).

Get ready to put your brain to the test and unleash your inner scientist with interactive exhibits like “the Brain” and “the Heart”.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! You can literally light up the room by completing a circuit using your own body, witness the magic of 3D printers turning ideas into reality, and even explore the cosmos without leaving Earth at the Fels Planetarium.

The Franklin Institute is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm, and general admission is a steal at $25 for adults and $21 for children (ages 3-11). Just a heads up that some special exhibits and IMAX shows require additional fees, but trust me, they’re worth the splurge!

Afternoon: Eastern State Penitentiary – Beer/Food Tour

Pay a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary

Feeling like you’ve seen enough art and science for one day? Buckle up, because your 2 days in Philadelphia adventure is about to take a haunting turn (well, maybe not haunting exactly, but definitely intriguing).

Our next stop is the Eastern State Penitentiary, a castle-like structure that was once one of Philadelphia’s most important historic sites. Opened in 1829, this prison was built with a revolutionary idea in mind: to reform criminals through isolation and reflection rather than resorting to harsh punishment. While this approach eventually proved flawed, the Eastern State Penitentiary undeniably paved the way for reform in the American justice system.

Today, you can walk the halls of this National Historic Landmark and get a glimpse into the lives of the prisoners who once walked here. A highlight for many visitors is the opportunity to see the cell of the infamous American gangster, Al Capone.

Word to the wise: this attraction might be a little intense for younger children due to its eerie atmosphere. During the summer months, they also offer nighttime tours, adding a whole new layer of eerie atmosphere.

Iconic Beer or Food Tour

Philly is known for it’s beer and food, so when in Rome…um, Philly.

So once you’ve scared yourself to death at the penitentiary, reward yourself with a variety of tasty bites of craft beers.

Two tours worth doing are the Philly’s Favorite Comfort Foods Tour with Chef Jacquie and the Philly Signature Guided Brewery Tour.

Evening: Chinatown

Grab a souvenir at Philadelphia’s Chinatown

If you’re not too tipsy from your guided brewery tour, head over to the city’s vibrant Chinatown as your incredible 2 days in Philadelphia winds down.

No trip to a major city is complete without experiencing the vibrant energy of its Chinatown, and Philly’s is no exception! Immerse yourself in the aromatic, colorful streets as you meander past shops brimming with trinkets, beautiful pieces of hand-crafted jewelry, or traditional silk scarves.

Once you’ve picked up a unique souvenir to commemorate your incredible Philly adventure, head over to one of many tempting restaurants offering steaming plates of deliciousness.

I recommend Yakitori Boy, where you can not only get some yummy food, but also show off your singing skills doing karaoke.

How to Get to Philadelphia

As the second-largest city on the East Coast, Philadelphia boasts a bustling metropolitan area and a thriving Center City that’s incredibly accessible.

Located smack dab in the middle of the Northeast Corridor, Philly is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from major cities. You’re just 100 miles south of New York City, 133 miles north of Washington D.C., and a mere 55 miles from Atlantic City.

Fly

For those arriving by air, your main hub will be Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), conveniently located just seven miles from Center City. Major domestic airlines flock here, and it’s a major international hub for American Airlines. Need to get downtown? SEPTA’s Airport Regional Rail Line whisks you away to various stations, while taxis offer a flat rate of $28.50 to Center City or metered fares elsewhere. Ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber are also readily available.

Bus

Prefer a scenic journey? Philly boasts excellent bus service, connecting you to all corners of the country. Greyhound and Megabus offer daily departures to popular destinations like New York City, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C., often at budget-friendly prices, with some fares starting as low as $1. Both services provide spacious seating and free Wi-Fi, making your ride comfortable and connected.

Train

While Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service connects Philadelphia to Boston, Washington, and other major cities, it often comes at a higher cost compared to flying. However, if you’re already on a train journey, you’ll arrive at 30th Street Station, a major hub where you can seamlessly connect to SEPTA trains and reach your final destination within Philly.

Car

While not necessarily my top recommendation, I understand some people prefer the freedom of a road trip. Philly’s location makes it an ideal stop on an East Coast adventure. Just a two-hour drive from major cities like New York City and Baltimore, and within easy reach of Washington D.C., Lancaster County, Atlantic City, and the New Jersey shore, Philly is perfect for a spontaneous day trip or weekend getaway.
